Avogadro Colloquia, established by Società Chimica Italiana in 2011, represent a discussion forum on challenging and trendy themes related to chemistry sciences rapid developments.   The events engage invited distinguished foreign and Italian speakers and are open to students’ and researchers’ participation.

The Speakers will provide the latest knowledge on the selected scientific theme with the aim to stimulate thinking on advancements in scientific research. The sessions will facilitate and stimulate the interactions among speakers and participants.

This is the fourth edition of Avogadro Colloquia. The event aims at celebrating the 150^th anniversary of the periodic table of elements and will address chemical sciences in relation to the broad and actual theme of Energy.

In 2012, the first edition dealt with "Organic Bio-Electronics: challenges and opportunities for Chemistry"; the second event held in Pisa in 2013 on "Challenges for theoretical and computational chemistry in Horizon2020"; the last one in Rome in 2015 “Chemistry and Light” celebrated the international year of light.

The 4^th edition of Avogadro Colloquia 2019

It is a great pleasure for both Società Chimica Italiana and Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche to welcome you in Rome to attend the Avogadro Colloquia 2019: “Elements of the Periodic Table for Energy”.

The 4^th edition of Avogadro Colloquia (AC) will be a prestigious conference bringing together distinguished scientists from Europe and Italy to share research interests in this worldwide recognized area of strategic importance. The challenge of energy and the solutions, that only chemistry can provide, constitutes the core of this conference for its impact on all socio-economic activities. AC 2019 offers the occasion to celebrate the 150^th anniversary of the Mendeleev's periodic table of chemical elements and will pinpoint the leading role played by chemistry and material sciences in focusing modern trends in energy while providing the latest perspectives on energy production, energy storage, recycling and savings.

This theme is examined under the elements viewpoint to highlight and to recognize the ultimate relevance of the Mendeleev's periodic table in the international year for its 150^th celebration, in synergy with EuChemS and IUPAC activities.

The energy challenge is proposed around three key dimensions to associate elements (as well as restricted group of elements) of the periodic table to chemistry for energy. Indeed, each of the identified elements holds a key role for moving beyond the current and prospected critical aspects to deliver advanced solutions within the themes in discussion.

The three dimensions addressed by Avogadro Colloquia 2019 are:

1) Energy production, with a focus on photovoltaics, associating Si with other strategic elements such as Pb, Cd, Te and C;

2) Energy storage, with a focus on batteries giving emphasis to Li together with Na, V and C for batteries, supercapacitors and integrated devices.

3) Saving and recycling, with a focus on catalysis to convert CO₂ into fuels, CH₄ to CH₃OH and biomasses to added-value products. Novel approaches based on non-noble metals such as Fe, Mn and Cu will be proposed and discussed to fulfill this goal.

A further in-depth approach will be offered by a rich Gallery of e-posters, where the AC Scientific Committee has invited around 20 young scientists from different Italian research groups to highlight energy-related advances in the scenario of molecular sciences and innovative materials.
